How VLMs Elevate Aviation Maintenance

How VLMs Elevate Aviation Maintenance Inventory

Vertical lift machines, sometimes also referred to as vertical lift modules and VLMs, exist to achieve a singular goal – to provide smart, adaptable inventory management that boosts employee safety and elevates productivity within a footprint that helps you maximize storage density.

VLMs excel in many industries, but they’ve delivered tremendous results to the aviation industry, where aircraft maintenance and repair operations are expected to store a larger and larger variety of components to support commercial aircraft fleets.

From aircraft locks to power distribution units, the demands of aircraft maintenance, repair and operations teams are varied. Traditionally, this inventory has been stored in steel shelving units or drawer cabinets on multilevel mezzanines, then placed and picked into locations by parts runners.

As the need to store more components increases, there are two main issues these companies are confronted with.

A Lack of Space to Accommodate Growing Inventory

Generally, parts inventory storage in aviation facilities is outdated and extremely manual. Add to that locations in spaces that are constrained by other revenue-generating departments, and you’ve got a major logistical headache.

The parts department usually has to completely relocate or simply utilize the floor space it occupies more wisely. Relocating electronic components, such as gyro panels and lighting control modules, introduces the risk of damaging these specialized parts, further complicating the search for solutions to space challenges.

A Need for Increased Traceability

Aviation components are often tracked down to the lot and serial number level, meaning traceability and easy identification is critically important. Parts like wing tips and fuel boost pumps must be traceable back to the manufacturer.

Traditional storage methods and processes lend themselves to pick errors and lost parts – and it’s largely not the fault of any singular person or issue. Parts specialists will sometimes place parts into the wrong locations, making the part impossible to find when it is requested by aircraft maintenance mechanics, and chaos builds.

Full traceability is a must for these manufacturers. If there ever is a request to know who touched the part and when, it can be provided promptly and accurately.

How VLMs Address these Challenges Painlessly

VLMs allow these aircraft maintenance operations to utilize the tall ceilings of their facilities to increase the storage density within their existing footprint. Units up to 30 feet tall are quite common, making more optimal use of space.

In addition to this storage density, VLMs provide access from the ground floor, meaning they no longer require personnel to climb stairs to find inventory.

Parts traceability is addressed by VLMs with cutting-edge software technology that logs the moves of the units. Every action the machine performs is timestamped and logged.

In the case of a mispick or other pick error, a root cause analysis can be performed to determine who had access to the location, when the movements occurred, and what transactions occurred prior to and after the original transaction.

VLMs also provide flexibility in the types of inventory that can be stored. Imagine having your electronic boards alongside flap transmitter assemblies. Having the flexibility to store small products like diodes in the same storage device as larger assemblies maximize the return on investment for aircraft maintenance operations.

Aviation maintenance operations across the globe utilize VLM technology to solve these issues.

From major airlines to the world’s leading package shipping companies, VLMs are relied upon to deliver parts in an expeditious fashion while also maximizing a facility’s space and resources.

What is BOPIS?

Posted by on in Products

b2ap3_thumbnail_BOPOS-machine.jpgBOPIS, an industry acronym that means buy online and pick up in store, is a new type of distribution model that
combines an online presence with a physical location. In order to reduce delivery times and eliminate shipping
costs, as well as improve customer service, retailers are offering their customers the option to have their online
purchases available for immediate pick-up at their storefronts. Other terms used in this new and growing space are
BOPIL, meaning buy online pickup in locker, BOSS, buy online ship-to store, and Click and Collect.

Brick and Mortar retailers are connecting the gaps in their online e-commerce strategies and physical footprint with their BOPIS
programs. The program leverages the traditional strength of the Brick and Mortar approach with the convenience found online which is helping to recover and replace the foot traffic and customer loyalty lost due to shifting buying patterns and online retail giants. BOPIS is allowing retailers the ability to achieve their ultimate goal of giving a great customer experience, creating that necessary customer loyalty for a successful business. A study on consumer buying trends during the 2018 holiday shopping season showed that Click and Collect was a competitive advantage for Brick and Mortar retailers.

General productivity at sheet metal fabricators and machine shops, is measured by how much input is required to get a certain output. Often "O.K-looking" numbers show up. Fair enough.

But if you look a little closer, at how much capital and space is wasted with poor material storage & retrieval, the landscape changes dramatically. Nice looking numbers turn out to be rather bad looking numbers instead.

Material storage and retrieval is one of the biggest waste factors. Most plants that I have seen (and believe me, I have seen a lot of plants) seriously struggle with storing and handling material. Sheet / plate as well as bar-stock (long-span) material.

Of course, Just In Time delivery of the material to your plant would be great. You would not even have a storage issue. But keep dreaming. Reality is different.

It feels a little paradoxical, equating lifesaving devices with clutter and their placement with inconvenience, but the standard remains — hospitals are to maintain free and unobstructed access to all exits, minimize fire risk, eliminate pickup parking lots, establish a clear line and destination for bed and patient transport, and maintain the integrity of the means of egress, for starters.

In previous years, The Joint Commission has cited more than 45 percent of hospitals with “insufficient compliance,” noting specific violations in hospital corridors and the storage therein. Crash carts, computers, empty beds and supply carts left unattended in corridors and paths merit such violations, which, in turn, spurs the conversation of reducing clutter in corridors per relevant regulations.

Business is Always Looking Up

Posted by on in Company News

New technology is a company staple that is increasing productivity and bringing the production of previously outsourced components in-house.

Vinyl flooring from Home Depot, Menards, and Lowe’s and bikes from Wal-Mart—there’s a good chance those items have spent time in a vertical storage unit built by Vidir Solutions Inc., an international company tucked among the fields, off a gravel road just outside the small burg of Arborg, Manitoba. Vidir designs and builds mechanical and automated systems that help companies reclaim and efficiently use lost space. Think about converting unused cubic feet over a loading bay, above an aisle, or in a hard-to-access basement or upper level into accessible storage areas.

Willie Dueck, who still enjoys walking the plant and watching it grow as he approaches his 90th year, established the company in the 1970s. The family-run business began as a small repair shop serving the local agricultural community and producing cattle equipment, grain wagons, and air seeders. Family members also owned and operated a lumberyard that sold vinyl flooring. The need to efficiently deal with the vinyl rolls laid the groundwork for Vidir’s first vertical storage unit.

Strict adherence to that age-old business adage “stick to your core competency” may best explain how a rural Manitoba manufacturer grew to become the sole supplier of storage racks to some of the largest big-box retailers in North America.

The company was named after a small Manitoba farming town that today is little more than an old schoolhouse and boarded-up church. In 1979, the pioneering entrepreneur Willie Dueck opened a repair shop for farmers there. It expanded into a lumberyard in nearby Arborg, and today the company operates three manufacturing facilities, has 130 employees and logs up to $25-million in annual revenue.

“It’s been an ongoing theme for us: ‘If it’s not our core offering, let’s outsource it,’” says David Klassen, chief financial officer of Vidir Solutions Inc., based in Arborg, Man. “We have to stick to what we’re good at, and we are a good manufacturer.”
